Understanding speech sound disorders
The term “speech sound disorder” refers to any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or mental representation of the sounds in speech and combinations of sounds that comprise words (i.e., phonological representation).
Most children make mistakes when learning to pronounce new words, and each sound has an age range for when they should make it correctly. If these errors in speech persist after a certain age, it is referred to as a speech sound disorder.
